The indicate a diversity of opinion within a group of professionals; and flesh out sci-fi ideas in ways that no amount of chase scenes, face kicking, or disemboweling ever can.matthewweflenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07540521459703556959noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4400152815785368447.post-45097251419291337382020-10-18T13:24:47.628-05:002020-10-18T13:24:47.628-05:00Funny, I never thought about how adding one of tho...Funny, I never thought about how adding one of those senior staff debates (a la "Pen Pals") in private would have greatly enhanced what was for me one of the worst episodes of the series, let alone this season.

This was the result of Jeri Taylor sending her idealistic boy writers to an Earth Day conference or something and them coming back all eager to write their environmental parable. The problem is...how? Pollution is bad. That's it.

I read how they were hung up on a planet where the industrial pollution was causing mutations on the people living on a literally-named "Island of Tears" for a while. Then switched to the more-interesting idea of a race on a dilithium-rich planet experiencing deadly mutations - to discover it was the mining and exporting of the crystals causing a steady drop in the planet's ambient EM field causing the biological havoc. THEN, they remembered the plot they discarded from "Suspicions", that Dr. Reyga was killed for discovering that warp drive was destroying the fabric of space-time. At the same time, Geordi's sister would be visiting to see how her brother was coping with the disappearance of their mother back in "Interface". Said sister would find her brother increasing obsessed with his job and fine-tuning the warp drive - which is why he would react so severely to Serova's claims that warp travel should be banned. But the boys didn't like the sister angle so we got Geordi's rivalry and the whole training Spot stories.

Frankly, after watching this mess front-loaded with B-stories to the point the actual A-story didn't get started for TWENTY MINUTES, I certainly wish he'd gotten the sister, even if it meant we'd lose Data's killer line "I cannot stun my cat," lol!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
