What's your pick for the best TOS episode?

If your pick isn't on the list, please let us know in the comments!

  1. Well, at least someone voted for something other than City. I was beginning to think this would be a pretty boring poll. :)

  2. It's too bad this poll didn't engender a healthy debate in its comments' section. It's not even clear at this late date if anyone, including the site's owners, continue to visit and review.

In which case, I'll be brief. Balance of Terror would be my pick, but perhaps in part due to having written up the episode and especially its directorial choices in some detail. Vincent McEveety places his cameras remarkably well, to the point of rewarding a shot by shot study for any aspiring undergrad director's out there. Those shots compliment a splendid script that's further enhanced by the episode's bracketing by a wedding left uncompleted at both ends. Kirk's glance towards the front of the chapel just before he leaves it in the penultimate scene suggests volumes about the character's relationship to a deity, and the final scene is striking for its simplicity and appropriateness. In it's way it's as strong as Kirk's "Let's get the hell out of here" at the close of City.
